Microsoft's new certification structure has been introduced to simplify the way certifications are delivered and to create a more targeted level of attainment.
With the new certification structure you can take advantage of a more concentrated approach to obtaining your certification. Additional focus has been placed on both specific Microsoft technology level (Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist, MCTS) and also on Microsoft job specific training (Microsoft Certified Professional Developer, MCPD, and Microsoft Certified IT Professional, MCITP, Levels).

Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS)
The new Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) certification allows you to show specific knowledge and expertise in a Microsoft technology, whether you are an IT Professional or a Developer. The MCTS certification is for professionals who want to demonstrate their capabilities in implementing, building, troubleshooting and debugging particular Microsoft technologies.
Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP)
The MCITP certification is the next level on from the MCTS certification. This level of certification focuses on Microsoft technologies that are more aligned to specific job roles rather then general Microsoft technologies as the MCTS certification does.
