The GEAR Learning Methodology
Be more successful at work and easily gain Microsoft certifications
Retendo training solutions are built using the GEAR learning methodology which was developed by Dr Ruth Clark, an expert in Educational Psychology and Instructional Design.
The emphasis is on learning in bite-sized chunks, practice over theory, and progressing at a pace that suits the individual. Proven to be more effective, this approach ensures that learners gain more knowledge and develop better skills. The result is that Retendo students are more successful at work and easily gain Microsoft certifications.
Retendo live online learning - powered by GEAR, delivered online
GEAR is a learning cycle. It stands for:
- (G)ATHER: Live online classes
- (E)XPAND: E-learning and reference materials
- (A)PPLY: Practical application on virtual Labs
- (R)ECEIVE FEEDBACK: Student assessment and instructor reporting
Each Retendo course is split into modules and each module is equivalent to one GEAR cycle.
Each module begins with a live instructor-led class, delivered online by a skilled Microsoft Certified Trainer. This is the “Gather” part of the GEAR cycle.
The online classes are followed by self-paced study. Learners “Expand” their knowledge using Microsoft Premium e-learning, Microsoft Press Books and Online Reference material and then “Apply” what they have learnt using practice labs.
The final step is ‘Receive Feedback’, where assessments are used to evaluate the learners’ understanding and ensure that they are ready to progress to the next module.
Each cycle of the ‘GEAR’ methodology includes approximately four hours of study and feedback. No single component is ever more than two hours long. This is because the human brain cannot concentrate for any longer than two hours - it reaches the point of cognitive overload.
Practice makes perfect
Retendo courses are spread over a number of weeks, with two course modules per week. This ensures that learners have the time required to thoroughly understand each topic. More importantly, they can practice and develop the real-world skills that they require to be good at their job.
Learning doesn’t stop when the course finishes
With Retendo, learning doesn’t stop at the end of the course. Students can access the materials, via the Retendo Learning Portal, for 90 days. This includes recordings of the live online classes and access to the practice labs. So it’s easy to squeeze in last minute exam cramming or practice an implementation one last time before having a go on the live system.
